Social Media Addiction

Social Media, whilst a source of enjoyment for many can lead to apparently addictive behaviour for others – and like all addictive behaviours it quickly manifests itself as a core Identity problem. There are many reasons why it’s a difficult situation to deal with and this workshops seeks to resolve most of them, if not all.

This two-hour workshop shows how to engage the client’s behavioural processes as well as their psychology – essential in the case of repeated physical actions as are shown in this circumstance.

Failure to properly address the automatic physical behaviour patterns would be likely result in too high an incidence of recidivism

Why take this course

Social Media addiction has many facets that make it difficult to work with – this workshop addresses them all with minimal recidivism.

What You Will Learn

Attempting to use the standard BWRT protocols such as Virtual World and Rolling Road can meet with some success in the case of the compliant client.

Frequently, though, important facets that are viewed by the Reptilian complex as a threat to survival are simply not recognised or addressed and the result can be a higher-than-acceptable level of recidivism. This workshop shows you how to get to the roots and provides a fatnastically effective way of helping those addicted to spcial media to set themselves free.

The material is easily adapted for use with such problems as addiction to online gambling and pornography.

One of the major problems to overcome is that in the normal way, BWRT works to change something the client woud prefer not to be feeling or doing. Here, though, the situation is different in that the individual, most of the time, wants to go on to social media, even where they have become vaguely aware that it is a toxic environment.

There are two distinctly different types of social media addict and each needs a different approach if success is to be found and maintained. They are:

  • Compulsive – they could spend less time on their device but somehow always stay on too long.
  • Apparently Obsessive – this one suffers great anxety and behaves almost as if their life depended on social media.

The two types can be difficult to recognise from their body language or presentation – social media addiction appears to have little to do with personality and may sometimes have much to do with past environment. A simple pair of related questions lays the situation bare so you don’t have to rely on the vagaries and unreliability of ‘intuition’.

It can be difficult to understand the importance that many people, especially the apparently obsessive type, attach to social media interaction but here are just some of the reasons behind it:

  • Social media carries data from the world; the reptilian complex has always devoured data from its surroundings because it was important to survival
  • To the reptilian complex, interaction of any sort carries potential risk
  • The stronger an individual’s hate/anger response to any stimulus, the more the reptilian complex will regard the source of the stimulus as a threat
  • If the viewing portal to this threat – the device – is closed, survival is more strongly threatened as far as the reptilian complex is concerned

So we’re confronted with the following situation: using a relatively brief therapy to convince the reptilian complex that social media has no teeth. The conscious intellect, of course, knows that social media cannot cause physical harm… and yet it can sometimes exert such pressure on the psyche that an individual may be moved to take their own life because of the despair that has been generated by the integrity they feel they have lost in the virtual world.

It is probably evident that to have a chance of success, two things are essential:

  • Resistance must be addressed and released or diverted – a specialised version of an effective ‘resistance buster’ is part of this programme.
  • The protocols need to reference the client’s specific psychological processes.

A Dual Process

The Unlock Routine in Level 2 work, and similar processes in both OCD and depression have proved their value in practice, and so we are going to use a similar process here, commencing with a Disengagement Protocol and following up with a Detachment Protocol each designed to perform their own specific task.

  • There are two different Disengagement Protocols, one for each type.
  • The protocol for the apparent obsessive is more complex and is software-aided, as in the OCD course (software is included in the course materials).
  • The Detachment protocol is the same for both but allows work for either total abstinence or client-designated ‘attendance’ time.

The programme provides a basic three-session therapy that will sometimes reveal other psychological material that needs addressing, and uses client worksheets between sessions. These serve two purposes:

  • They keep the client’s neural pathways attached to the work in hand, in order to minimise recidivism.
  • They provide a new focus that can serve as a focal point assisting in the disengagement process.

Is this suitable for me?

This course is suitable for you if you work with individuals who are addicted to social media or similar situations, since much of the material is relevant to other concepts and should be easily adaptable.
